Rep. Case brings spirit of service to St. Anthony School

WINSTED — State Rep. Jay Case (R-63) visited St. Anthony School on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and presented the school with a new American flag.

The flag previously flew above the state capitol in Hartford on Jan. 22 and was requested by school Principal Patricia Devanney.

“Every day, we have our students and staff go outside to the playground to begin the school day with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance,” Devanney said. “One morning, shortly after the last election, I decided to get in touch with Rep. Case to see if he could provide us with a new flag.”

Devanney said the school’s old American flag was getting worn and needed to replaced.

Case said he was more than happy to deliver a new flag for the school.

“I think it’s important for state representatives to come out and talk to students at schools because sometimes they don’t understand why a person like me drives around, visits public events and does what I’m doing,” Case said. “It’s important to speak to children about state government because, in a few years, they will grow up and become constituents. Educating these children earlier about what we do in Hartford makes them better prepared for this time.”

Principal Devanney agreed with Case.

“I think our role as educators is to make sure our kids are well rounded students,” Devanney said. “A big part of it is to make sure students are aware now of everything which goes on in the state legislature. It’s important to be hands on when it comes to state government.”

Case’s visit to the school was part of National Catholic Educational Association’s (NCEA) Catholic Schools Week.

According to the organization’s website at www.ncea.org/news/catholicschoolsweek.asp, the national event is a promotion of Catholic schools across America.

As part of his visit to the school, Case read a state proclamation in front of the school body commemorating the week.

“I would like to congratulate teachers and staff members at St. Anthony for their dedication to the community to high educational achievements,” he said.”

The proclamation was signed by Senate President Donald Williams (D-29), House Speaker Brendan Sharkey (D-88) and Secretary of State Denise Merrill.

“Coming out to a school like St. Anthony is great especially because what happened in Newtown has pushed a lot of things aside in the state’s Legislature,” Rep. Case said. “We need to make sure students know that they are safe within their schools.”
