Rev. Edward K. Trefz

SHARON — The Rev. Edward K. Trefz, 94, died March 29, 2010. He was born Nov. 5, 1915, in Prairieburg, Iowa.

He married Paula Book on Feb. 15, 1939. His wife of 71 years survives him.

His education was a significant part of Ed’s life. He graduated from Coggon High School and Coe College in Iowa, and also attended George Williams College in Illinois. He earned his Master’s of Divinity at McCormick Seminary in Chicago, and received his Doctorate of Theology from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Edward was ordained as a Presbyterian minister before entering the military as a chaplain in World War II.

After serving in the military he was the head of the religion department at Hastings College in Nebraska. He moved to Philadelphia with his family in 1954, to work for the Board of Christian Education for the Presbyterian Church as the director of Adult Education. Later he became an editor of religious materials for Westminster Press before retiring with his wife to their country property in Sharon, in 1981.

In 1998, they moved to White Horse Village in Newtown Square, Penn., and started making new friends, volunteering at the Village and continuing to travel the world with friends.

Ed died at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Riddle, Penn., after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at White Horse Village later this spring.

In addition to his wife, Paula, he is survived by his daughter, Paula, and her family; his son, Stephen, and his family, in Iowa; and his sister, Jean Schonnmen of Center Point, Iowa.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
