Rivertonians paint it black

RIVERTON — Residents are invited to take part in the Riverton Bridge Painting Party, which will take place Aug. 29 to 30. The bridge’s iron railings will be refurbished from faded, peeling green to a shiny new black.

The Riverton Bridge (Route 20) crosses the Farmington River between Hitchcock Properties and the Old Riverton Inn.

The town was given approval by the state Department of Transportation to repaint the bridge using volunteers, First Selectman Don Stein said.

“We’re going to get some people together,†Stein said.

Hitchcock Properties has donated the paint for the project and the Farmington River Coordinating Committee is funding the state-licensed contractor who is now removing the lead-based paint on the bridge’s railings, Stein said.

“And now it will no longer keep flaking off into the river,†he said of the old paint.

So far the town has received a good response from residents interested in stepping forward and volunteering for the project, Stein said.

He added that if enough residents participate — and the weather cooperates — the town may be able to paint the bridge in only one day.

The town will provide beverages and snacks for volunteers.

For more information or to volunteer, call Stein at 860-379-8285 or dstein@barkhamsted.us.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
