Robert Nixon Angus

NORTH CANAAN — Robert Nixon Angus, 76, died earlier this month in the Czech Republic, where he had a second home. He had never fully recovered from a stroke suffered last year.

He was born in Hartford, where his father, Dr. Leslie Angus, was on the staff of the Institute of Living at the Hartford Retreat.

A graduate of Bucknell University, he was a well-known journalist in the field of audio and electronics magazines, first in New York City and later as a freelancer from his home in North Canaan. His particular interest was monitoring international developments in audio and related technology, which led to extensive foreign travel.

In North Canaan, he was active in local Democratic politics. Sheila (Balfe) Angus, his first wife, was a reporter for The Lakeville Journal.

He had a lifelong passion for classical music, old movies and radio shows.

Through the Internet he exchanged ideas and materials with a wide circle of friends.

His infectious enthusiasm for music helped inspire his stepson, Thomas, whose original compositions were played at a memorial service held in the Czech Republic.

He is survived by his wife, Lenka Angusova; his stepsons, Thomas and Steven; and a sister, Esther Kininmonth, of Sheffield, Mass.

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
