Robert Wilcox Connell

HILLSDALE — Robert Wilcox Connell, 91, formerly of Lilesville, N.C., and Hillsdale, died from natural causes on July 11, 2015, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home.

Bob was born July 26, 1923, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of the late Ora Belle (Wilcox) and Amos Clarendon Connell. 

Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific and in occupied Japan during World War II.  Upon returning after the war he completed his education in animal husbandry at Michigan State, earning a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State in Animal Husbandry.

He was very active at Michigan State and played football for the Michigan State Wolverines. 

After graduation he took his first job as a farm manager for Armand Hammer, raising purebred Black Angus cattle, a career he pursued with much success for 62 years. 

On June 10, 1950, he married Rosemary Ann Brock of Kansas City, Mo. She predeceased him on May 10, 1992.  He and Rosemary raised seven children together, and Bob was lucky to get to know his seven grandchildren and three of his seven great-grandchildren. 

He was active his entire life, personally managing his two farms in Wadesboro, N.C., and Lilesville until he became incapacitated in June 2011. 

He was a diehard Yankees fan, and also followed the New York Jets. He loved debating politics with his children and friends. In later life, he loved music and playing bingo at the VA home, where he was everyone’s friend.  

Bob was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Wadesboro and Our Lady of Hope in Copake Falls. He was a member of the VFW in Copake, N.Y.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Elizabeth Connell of Salisbury, N.C., Kathleen Connell of LaVerne, Calif., Patricia Connell of Salisbury, N.C., Colleen Simo and her husband, Raymond, of South Egremont, Mass., Rosemary McCullough and her husband, Carl, of Waterloo, N.Y., Robert Wilcox Connell Jr. of Albany, N.Y., and Timothy Connell of Dalton, Ga.; his grandchildren, Jessica Simo and her husband, Mark Sochaski,  Vanessa Simo and her husband, Shawn Dennis, Brittany Davrichachvili-Simo and her husband, Vato Davrichachvili,Anthony Connell, Rosie Connell, Shannon McCullough and Casey McCullough; his great-grandchildren, Jacob and Mae Sochaski, Olivia and Yohan Davrichachvili, Liam Simo and Oliver and Harrison Dennis.

Friends and family are invited and may call on Thursday, July 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home in Copake.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 17, at Our Lady of Hope Parish, the Rev. George Brennan officiating. 

Burial will follow in St. Bridget’s Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials contributions may be sent to the Activity Department at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Salisbury.

Alfred earned a PhD in Medieval Jewish Philosophy from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1963 and in 1971 was awarded a D. Phil in Medieval Islamic Philosophy from Oxford University, Linacre College.

LAKEVILLE — Alice Gustafson (née Luchs), 106, of Lakeville, Connecticut, passed away on March 2, 2026. Born in Chicago on Dec. 15, 1919, Alice was raised between New York City, Florida and Lime Rock, where she graduated from Salisbury High School in 1937.

Alice’s career spanned roles at Conover-Mast Publications in New York City, The Lakeville Journal, the Interlaken Inn, and as a secretary to the past president of Smith College. In 1948, she married Herbert “Captain Gus” Gustafson at Trinity Church in Lime Rock.

KENT — Carol L. Hoffman Matzke passed away peacefully with family by her side on Feb. 22, 2026.

She was a beloved mother and stepmother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, community member, and friend.Her presence will be deeply missed. She had a beautiful way of loving, accepting, and supporting all the many members of her vast family, and of welcoming others into her family circle. She was intelligent and well-informed about history and current events, and she took a genuine interest in knowing and understanding everyone she met, from friends and family right down to the stranger who stood next to her in line at the grocery store. Kind and generous, her family and friends knew that she would do anything in her power to help and support them.
