Rotary benefit for Bolivia Saturday

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Rotary Club will sponsor a benefit concert, “Musicians for a Sustainable Bolivia,† Saturday, Aug. 22, 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Church.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward a college scholarship fund for the children of La Colonia Ecológica, an orphanage in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

During the summer of 2008, Lakeville resident Alicia DePaolo traveled to Bolivia on a trip funded by a summer grant from Smith College.

The orphanage is run by a non-profit organization called Sustainable Bolivia. DePaolo said the facility works with about 100 children, ranging in age from infants to adolescents, with half of them permanent residents.

Cochabamba is a city of 900,000, with extremes of wealth and poverty. La Colonia Ecológica provides shelter, meals  and education — services that are hard to come by for the poorest families.

The concert seeks to raise money to send a group of 15 teens to college. Tuition for four years in Bolivia is about $2,000, DePaolo said.

If this effort is successful, the organizers hope to make the concert an annual event.

The suggested donation for the concert is $25. Reservations can be made by calling 860-435-2170 or by e-mail  at hevrehmusic@gmail.com.
