Running and jumping into summer

FALLS VILLAGE — The abundant rain this month has forced many outdoor events to be canceled or postponed. This year’s elementary school track meet for the Region One School District was an example. Originally planned for May 28, which was a washout, the meet was rescheduled for Friday, May 31,  which turned out to be a perfect, sunny day.

Held at the track and fields behind Housatonic Valley Regional High School, the meet consisted of seven events: 100 meter dash, 400 hundred meter dash, shuttle relay, high jump, long jump, shot put and softball.

Middle school students from all Region One schools competed, bringing together the towns of Cornwall, Kent, North Canaan, Falls Village, Salisbury and Sharon.

The students wore T-shirts announcing their schools. Some of the athletes showed school spirit by painting their school’s name on their legs and arms.

The feeling at the meet was more fun and celebratory than serious and competitive, but students did gather to cheer their classmates on as they faced students from other schools.

The young athletes were surrounded by familiar faces: volunteer teachers and parents timed the races, measured the jumps and helped organize the various events.

In the times between events, when students weren’t running, jumping and throwing, they relaxed on the lawn and ate popsicles. The meet was the perfect transition from the school year to the summertime.
