Sea life helps wrap up summer reading

WINSTED — The sea came to life for young readers at the Beardsley and Memorial Library on Saturday, Aug. 15, thanks to the appearance of a maritime specialist who helped wrap up the summer reading program. Participants heard a presentation and had the opportunity to handle a few ocean creatures.

The event started with a brief lesson in tidal science, followed by 20 minutes of an activity in which the children could hold the animals and tried to ascertain various facts about them.

“The kids learn a lot, the little one especially,” said visitor David Sand, who was holding his daughter Frances. Frances attempted to say the word “intertidal” for the first time.

“I think it’s important to have these presentations because people aren’t always aware of their impacts on beaches, and the maritime is always trying to spread awareness of that. Even in Winsted, which is really far away, we can affect that environment,” Andrea Wagner said. “Anyone can call the aquarium and schedule a program.”

“We came to look at books and we found this!” said Kim Janak, who was there with her children. “Winsted is not near a shore, so it’s great to bring the shore to the kids! Kids ask more questions when they get to touch things.”

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
