Second annual pig roast for food drive

Editor’s Note: Last week’s front-page Amenia Lions Club article incorrectly announced the pig roast as a Lions Club event. In actuality, the roast is put on solely by volunteers looking to raise money for the Sunday in the Country Food Drive.

AMENIA — The second annual Pig Roast will be held Saturday, July 25, at the Amenia Fish & Game Association. Running from noon to 6 p.m., tickets are $10 for adults and only 200 will be available. The event is to benefit the Sunday in the Country Food Drive, a charity helping out 13 food pantries in the Tri-state area, started by radio personality NASCAR Dave MacMillan.

There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, baked beans and, of course, the pig. It’s a family event, so bring a blanket, the kids and your beverage of choice. And if all that isn’t enough fun, there will also be games like horseshoes and a DJ.

Tickets are available at the American Legion Post 178 in Millerton, Jack’s Auto in Wassaic, the WHDD radio station in Sharon, the North East Athletic Center and at VFW Post 5444 in Dover.

MacMillan acknowledged that the Sharon Fire Department will hold its Adult Soapbox Derby on the same day, but encouraged people to support the derby and then head over to the pig roast. The roast should be ready sometime around 4 p.m.

For more information, MacMillan can be reached at 914-475-5918 or at dmacmillan@fairpoint.net.

The Sunday in the Country Food Drive raised $46,300 last year and was able to help provide 550 Thanksgiving dinners and 530 Christmas dinners for families in need. This year MacMillan, who said that they have never set a goal for raising money before, announced that the food drive is trying to reach $50,000 this season.

A complete article, including a list of upcoming fundraisers between now until the holidays, will be published in next week’s paper.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”

Kent Barns was alive with art on Saturday, June 13, as three new shows opened at Peggy Mercury and Kenise Barnes Fine Art, featuring a variety of fascinating paintings and drawings from four local artists.

Peggy Mercury, which in just two years has earned a reputation for curating remarkable collections of fine beauty products and accessories, continues to find exciting art to complement its offerings. The new show, “Portraits,” features four pairs of paintings by Millerton-based artist Alexis England. The “portraits” she paints, however, feature some pretty unexpected sitters.
