Sharon Center School budget up 2.42 percent

SHARON — The Board of Education formally approved the 2007-08 operating budget for Sharon Center School Monday, March 12, at a brisk and businesslike meeting.

The $3,368,225 spending plan represents a 2.42 percent increase.

The budget takes into account the reduction of staff by one full-time employee, reflects ever-increasing energy costs, and provides for the replacement of 52 computers and associated software licensing fees.

Board member Jerry Cramp said of the budget, "It’s hard to do much better than that."

Sharon Center School will be minus one full-time teacher next year, said Region One Superintendant Patricia Chamberlain, in keeping with enrollment trends.

Also from the meeting:

• Chamberlain said that summer school this year will be held in Cornwall and will be a skills program, not enrichment.

• Three SCS staff members received grants from the Millenium Fund, as announced by board member Kate Beatty: librarian Judy Gafney, who will use the money to buy books for "The Lunch Bunch," a group of third- and fourth-grade readers; and science projects run by middle school teacher JoEllen Niedeck and second grade teacher Virginia Eschbach.
