Shopping in Cornwall is a moveable feast

CORNWALL — As always during the holiday season, there are plentiful local shopping options — including many that feature made in the U.S. and made in the Northwest Corner items. The Wandering Moose Café & Catering Company, next to the Covered Bridge, is a West Cornwall landmark. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Aside from holiday dining (it’s always a treat to go out at this cooking-intensive time of year), gift certificates are available. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner is served Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The restaurant is closed Mondays. Owner Bianca Griggs said many of the items in the stores are made in the United States. The shop has women’s clothing made in California, glass decorations and drinking glasses by Nunwell Glass in Connecticut and many other decorative and art items from the area. For the holiday season, hours are Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gift certificates are available. For more information, call 860-672-2969.The Cornwall Package Store at the junction of routes 7 and 4 in Cornwall Bridge carries wines from around the world (and many from the U.S.) in a wide range of prices. The store offers 99 brands of beer, including well-known and craft domestic brews. There is a free wine tasting every Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. Gift certificates are available. Proprietor Richard Bramley has decades of experience and is glad to make suggestions, at any price range. For more information, call 860-672-6645.Matthews 1812 House at 250 Kent Road ships small-batch, homemade baked goods, all made at their location in Cornwall, almost anywhere in the world. Shoppers can also stop by the bakery to purchase specialty cakes, cookies and brownies, all made with no preservatives. They also sell fine chocolates, candied fruits, nuts and dessert sauces made by other companies. Their offerings can be found online at www.matthews1812house.com. CANAAN — Anita L. (King) Gochey, 85, of 77 South Canaan Rd. died June 5, 2026, at Geer Village. She was the wife of the late Lester Gochey. Anita was born July 16, 1940,in Winsted, daughter of the late Ivan and Irene (Dulude) King.

Anita was well known throughout the Northwest Corner. She worked for many local businesses and organizations. Anita worked at the Rexall Drug Store, C.A. Lindell and Sons, Bob’s Clothing, Brooks Pharmacy, and the Housatonic Valley Regional High School in the cafeteria.She used her skills in calligraphy to complete the record books for the North Canaan Congregational Church.Anita’s daughter remembers her as being very creative with cardboard, and a loving mom.
