Should town hire a professional treasurer?

At a special town meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, voters will be asked to approve an ordinance that will allow the selectmen to appoint the town treasurer. Currently,  it is an elected position.
The current treasurer, Fremont Besmer, was elected in 2007. His term expires in November 2009.

First Selectman Ruth Epstein said that during the past year, the selectmen have discussed the idea of hiring a professional to be the town treasurer, because town finances have become so complex.

Epstein said that some residents have expressed concern about the proposed ordinance, because they want citizens to have a say in their town government.
“As for myself, she said, “I am not opposed to the ordinance, but I’m not too sure it is realistic.

A full-time treasurer’s salary for fiscal 2009 would likely be $18,040. The town would also pay $1,835 for an assistant treasurer.

“That salary is too low, Epstein said. “If they are looking for someone who has a bachelor’s degree in accounting, I think they would have to pay a lot more.
If voters approve the ordinance at the town meeting, it would take effect in November 2009.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”
