Singular art at Argazzi

Judith Singelis sees work that seduces her eye, contacts the artists and, more often than not, cajoles them into allowing her to show their art in her gallery in Lakeville, CT. Artists from our region as well as the Midwest have made Argazzi Art the place to enjoy an eclectic mix of mediums, styles, subjects. Now through late August, Singelis is showing work from her inventory as well as a few new pieces from artists who particularly interest her.

“Joy,” shown above right, is by Lenore Gimpert from Michigan. Its riot of abstract peonies is made from oil, wax and lacquer on canvas in textured white, pale pink and a wonderful, flat gold. A stunning, large oil by Jimmy Wright dominates Argazzi's back room. Thick swirls of grays, whites, black and hints of pastel color create a compelling painting of flowers just past their peak, a recurring Wright theme. (He always includes a single sunflower in memory of his deceased partner.) And John Maggiotto's two silver-print photographs remind us of the power of a camera in an artist's hands.

Argazzi Art is at 22 Millerton Rd. in Lakeville, CT. The gallery is open Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Singelis is often there during the rest of the week. Call 860-435-8222 or go to www.argazziart.com.

When the guide gets it wrong

Rosa setigera is a native climbing rose whose simple flowers allow bees to easily collect pollen.

Dee Salomon

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
