A Sleepy Town Awakened By Antiques

Brimfield, that unique trading mecca for antiques enthusiasts, will soon be heating up with good collections from the exhibitors and reasonable buying from the customers.

The first of three seasonal installments will be held May 9 to 14 in the otherwise sleepy Massachusetts town of Brimfield, where about 2,000 exhibiting dealers and many thousands of shoppers will appear for the nearly week-long round of markets offering antiques as the mainstay, along with collectibles, textiles and much more.

In 1959, an auctioneer started an antiques flea market in Brimfield that has grown over the years into about 20 different fields. Each field has its own rules of operations within the confines of the town’s zoning laws, so shopping runs from 6 a.m. until sundown each day, Tuesday through Sunday, three times each year.

Some fields charge for first-day admission, while others do not. Parking is always a charge from $5 to $10 depending to how close the lot is to the action. The food options are great — my favorite is the salads at the concession at Hertan’s.

Tuesday is terribly hectic with fields opening at various times — and some for only two hours — but most dealers remain open Wednesday through Saturday. Wednesday through Friday are the strongest shopping days for customers looking to find special furnishings for their homes and additions for collections, be that antiques or later collectibles.

Driving to Brimfield from the Northwest Corner takes less than two hours. For a GPS address, use Hertan’s — one of the fields in the middle of the street — at 6 Mill Lane Road, Brimfield, Mass.

By the way, your faithful reporter exhibits at Hertan’s, so if you happen to get there, stop by and say hello.

The Brimfield Antiques & Collectibles Show will be held May 9 to 14, July 11 to 16 and Sept. 5 to 10. For more details, go to www.brimfield.com.
