Some sweet surprises as winners announced at festival

KENT — Drumroll, please! The winners of the gingerbread house contest that was a highlight of the Kent Gingerbread Festival have been announced. During a small ceremony at Gingerbread Station on Sunday, Dec. 19, master gingerbreader Jill Zinzi read the names of the most popular gingerbread creations at the town’s first Gingerbread Festival, as well as the winners of the  Shop Kent shopping-spree prize drawing.

The winners were determined by votes from the public as well as the opinions of judges Patsy Stroble, Kari Morales, Jill Zinzi and Teresa Layman.

The first place winner for the adult division of the houses that were on display at Gingerbread Station received a prize of $490 worth of gift certificates from Kent businesses.

In the children’s division the winners are:

Third place: A tie between Trisha Worthington and Samantha Starr.

Second place: Jacob Finch.

First place: Taylor Hoefer and Jennifer Petrone.

 In the adult division of the houses that were displayed at Gingerbread Station, the winners are:

Honorable Mention (Most Creative): Larry Cassidy for his gingerbread car.

Third place: Alison Vitolo

Second place: A tie between Cathleen Rossetti and Amy Bocompanie for “The Day After;� and mother-daughter team Michelle and Ali Nelson for their candy cane house.

Best in Show: Glen and Cici Nielsen for their hexagonal gingerbread house.

In the adult division of the Window Walk gingerbread houses displayed around town, the winners are:

Honorable mention: Michelle Turner of Kent Coffee and Chocolate.

Third place: Lucy and Martha Atwood, for their gingerbread house at the Fife ’n Drum.

Second place: A tie between the students and staff of the Marvelwood School, whose house is on display at Kent Wine & Spirit; and Crystal Castle’s Jane Jackson, Dorothy Cass and Tish Fila.

Best in Show: The Millstone Bakery’s Carol Hawran.

The winners of the Shop Kent shopping-spree drawing are:

Third place: Debbie Dwy of Kent won $150 worth of gift certificates.

Second place: Bob Chirlion of New York City won $300 worth of gift certificates.

First place: Sherry Hardwick Thomas of Washington, Conn., won $625 worth of gift certificates.

The gingerbread houses will be on display through Dec. 31.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
