A special birthday celebration

NORTH CANAAN — The annual combined birthday party of Dr. Don Martin and Frank Pierzga was enhanced with extra ceremony this year. State Rep. Roberta Willis (D-64) honored both men with proclamations from the state Legislature.

The party also marked the end of Martin’s 47 years as a dentist in North Canaan and was a thank-you for his years as the head of the Exchange Club of North Canaan (of which he is still a member).

The celebration was held Thursday, Aug. 27, at VFW Couch Pipa in concert (so to speak) with a Sunset Series musical performance by the Arthur Holmes Blues Band.

Martin tried to retire a few years ago but was called back by popular demand. This time, he says, he’s really retiring and has sold his practice.

He was also given a key to the town of North Canaan and a proclamation by the selectmen earlier this week in honor of his service. The party, which was organized by family, friends and the Exchange Club, with food provided by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, attracted about 200 people.

Thursday’s event was also the final concert of the summer. They are expected to return next summer, held again at Couch Pipa and hosted again by the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary.
