Special town meeting on school board representative scheduled for Aug. 28

SHARON — A special town meeting to vote on a resolution to change the Region One Board of Education representative from an appointed position to an elected position has been scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

The town meeting was scheduled by the selectmen at their regular meeting on Aug. 11, after they received a petition with 31 signatures requesting a town meeting vote.

While there was no discussion about the resolution at the selectmen’s meeting, there was plenty of discussion at a selectmen’s meeting in June, when resident Howard Randall requested the change in a letter to the board.

Randall wrote that making the representative an elected position would “ensure accountability to the town as well as to the school board.

Selectman John Mathews agreed with Randall and said having an elected representative “would open up the process.

First Selectman Malcolm Brown and Selectman Tom Bartram disagreed with Randall and Mathews. Brown said that making the school board representative into an elected position would create a “disruption.

Current representative Judge Manning has served as the town’s Region One school board representative since 2001. He was elected as the board’s chairman in 2005. He was most recently appointed to the board in 2008 and his term is scheduled to expire in 2010.

The Region One board oversees Housatonic Valley Regional High School and regional administration issues including pupil services (special education services).

The regional representative is appointed by the Board of Education. The other five towns of the regional school district North Canaan, Falls Village, Salisbury and Kent.

The towns of Falls Village, North Canaan and Salisbury elect their representative. The other towns appoint their representative.

KENT — Despite sub-zero wind chills, Kent’s Parks and Recreation Commission is focused on summer.

At its Tuesday, Dec. 2, meeting, the Commission voted in favor of a bid to rehabilitate Emery Park’s swimming pond, bringing the town one step closer to regaining its municipal swimming facility. The Commission reviewed two RFP bids for the reconstruction of the defunct swimming pond, a stream-fed, man-made basin that has been out of use for six years.
