PINE PLAINS — More than 100 athletes descended upon Stissing Lake in Pine Plains to take part in the third annual Stissing Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, July 7.The race was comprised of three legs: a half-mile swim in Stissing Lake; a 17-mile bike ride through Pine Plains, Gallatin and Ancram; and a 3.7-mile run around Stissing Lake.“The triathlon was originally created to show off the beauty of the area while holding an exciting athletic event,” said triathlon director Jen Chase. This year’s winner was Bruce Cadehead, 48, of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., with a total time of 1 hour 24 minutes and 7 seconds. With the overwhelming turnout, a great number of volunteers were on hand throughout the day to assist the athletes.“It’s an event that the whole community takes part in,” Chase said. After crossing the balloon archway finish line in the Stissing Lake Beach parking lot, the athletes were invited to enjoy a barbecue under the Lions Club Pavilion.“The wrap-up barbecue is great. The athletes and volunteers eat free, and it’s $10 for everyone else. There were many local sponsors, including several local restaurants and Peck’s Market which donated food and side dishes for the barbecue,” Chase said. All money raised by the event will go to the Pine Plains Recreation Department.“The hopes are for a biking and running lane to go in around the lake,” she said. For more information on the race go to www.stissingsprint.com; all results can be viewed at www.compuscore.com.
