Talent show is a thriller

KENT — There was singing, dancing and a whole lot of everything going on at the fourth annual Kent Children’s Center Talent Show, held at the Community House on Saturday, May 15. Fourteen acts performed.

“When we first started this four years ago we were looking for a nontraditional fundraiser, Christine Branson, president of Kent Children’s Center, said. “We did all the traditional fundraisers and bake sales before. The first time we put the show on, people liked it, so we’ve continued on with it.

The competition was broken up into three age groups: A junior division for ages 4 to 11, a teen division for children 12 to 17 and an adult division for over-18 performers.

Elvis impersonator Drew Dyal, who was dressed up in a full “King outfit, was one of the judges for the event.

“To win, it’s all about stage presence, man, Dyal said. “If you whisper in the microphone, then pack it up, man. It’s going to be rough and tough, but you gotta have talent to put it all together, man.

Branson estimated that the event raised $700 for the center.

In the junior division: First place went to Max Branson, who performed “Time of Your Life by Green Day; second place went to Sage Perry, who performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow; third place went to Mia Kartchner and Gillian Schullery for their dance set to the music of Michael Jackson.

In the teen division: First place went to the Walker Sisters for their dance performance; second place went to “The Predators, a band made up of Zach Schullery, Billy Hoadley and Tyler Hoadley; third place went to Oliver Martinez, who sang “Never Say Never by The Fray.

In the adult division: First place went to Alexis Willoughby, who sang “Everything I Know by In The Heights; second place went to Chris Lynch, who sang his song “Nobody’s Right ’til Everyone’s Wrong; third place went to John Couch, who song “Train of Glory by Jonathan Edwards.

The artist called ransome

‘Migration Collage' by ransome

Alexander Wilburn

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.
