Town mourns loss of Gary Keeler

PINE PLAINS — The community of Pine Plains is mourning the loss of Gary Keeler, the water company superintendent, who passed away at home at the age of 66 on Sunday, March 5.

“I was very surprised,” said Town Clerk Judy Harpp, who had known Keeler since high school. “He was behind me in school, but I always knew who he was, being from a Pine Plains family.”

Years later, the two worked together as bus drivers for the Pine Plains Central School District.

Keeler began his professional life at DeLavel in Poughkeepsie, and then worked for IBM until he bought his own business, CT Glass, in nearby Red Hook. During that time he was also building inspector for the village of Rhinebeck.

“Then, he worked for the town as water superintendent while I’ve been here,” Harpp said, noting Keeler joined the town of Pine Plains Water Improvement Area after being appointed on Nov. 20, 2008. Back then, his title was clerk of the works.

In that capacity, Keeler made sure that the water department functioned properly and was in charge of any necessary upgrades.

“He made sure it was all taken care of,” said Harpp.

Always involved with his community, Keeler was an active member of the Pine Plains Lions Club. He served as president, chairman of barbecue and chairman of reservations with the Lions.

His pastimes included hunting, fishing and playing drums in the Sole Distributor Band.

Keeler leaves behind wife JoAnn, to whom he was married for 42 years. He had two daughters, Jennifer Brown and Heather Massimo, as well as several grandchildren, three brothers, nieces, nephews and mother-in-law.

So far, plans have not been announced about Keeler’s replacement. For the time being, that work will fall on the shoulders of Ray Jurkowski, the town engineer who is also the water company superintendent substitute.
