Toys, antiques and a new meeting place at P.D. Walsh's Country Store

FALLS VILLAGE — Children looked curiously at antique toys, potential buyers eyed works of art, and two women settled down for a game of Chinese checkers during the opening of P.D. Walsh’s Country Store Saturday, Aug. 7.

Walsh bustled about, chatting with customers and ringing up sales on an elderly cash register.

One man approached, with a metal egg box — from Terni’s store in Millerton — and said he saw no price tag.

“I wasn’t going to sell it, said Walsh. “How about $20?

A woman was looking at a rendering of the South Canaan Meeting House by Joan Palmer of Lakeville. “I was married there, said the lady.

The store’s inventory is eclectic, to say the least. There is art from local artists and the children’s summer art program; knickknacks and bric-a-brac spanning the decades (if not centuries); straw hats; three sturdy old potato ricers; homemade dog biscuits; a wooden toboggan; and a supremely inexpensive and effective summer toy for children, balsa airplanes.

A corner of goods is devoted to Habitat for Humanity; “100 percent of the money goes to them, said Walsh.

The Chinese checker set was made by Walsh’s late husband, Dick. “Does anybody even know how to play anymore? wondered Walsh.

A player made a complicated and seemingly expert move, as if in reply.

The store is at 107 Main St. (the old Town Hall). For more information, call 860-824-9833.
