100 years ago — August 1915

SALISBURY — Clayton Morey, infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Morey, had the misfortune to fracture one of his arms while playing with some other boys on Spurr’s field on Tuesday, where the carpenters are preparing for the Salisbury Fair. He was taken to the Winsted hospital.

Engineer G. Everett Hill of New York and his assistants have been busily engaged in surveying the fire district for the Lakeville Business Men’s Association who are endeavoring to secure a sewer system for the village.

SALISBURY — Miss Helen Eggleston of the Journal force is enjoying her vacation which she is spending with relatives in Great Barrington and other places.

LIME ROCK — Much sympathy is manifested in this community for Dr. Skiff in the death of Mrs. Skiff.

CHAPINVILLE — Mrs. Robert Scoville had a picnic on Tuesday at the Mansion for the boys and girls who have had the gardens at Grassland Farms.

50 years ago — August 1965

Word of the superiority and charms of the newly improved Sharon Hospital seems to have reached the bird world. A little over a week ago, a young blue jay (with down still showing among the quilled plumage) flew into the lobby and thence into the Hospitality Shop.

Treated courteously (and generously) by Mrs. Robert Fiengo, a hostess in the shop, he decided he had happened on a pretty pleasant place and made up his mind to return. Since then he has been coming back daily, sitting on Mrs. Fiengo’s finger for his “treat” and paying visits to other departments. He has investigated the Admissions Desk and likes to perch on Miss Joan Barnett’s blonde head.

Mr. and Mrs. William B. Barnett Jr. and family have moved from the Ball cottage, Salisbury, to an apartment in the former Decker house, Bostwick Street.

FALLS VILLAGE — The Falls Village Volunteer Fire Department was called to Kellogg Road last Thursday at 7:15 a.m. to extinguish a burning tree which had been struck by lightning. The new fire truck, with its built-in water tank and extra-long hose, handled the job most effectively.

Pegeen Fitzgerald, famous radio personality and animal lover, will present the Little Guild of St. Francis Challenge Trophy to the Cat (not pedigreed) In Best Condition at the first annual Pet Show sponsored by the Little Guild of St. Francis for the Welfare of Animals Inc. Saturday Aug. 28.

25 years ago — August 1990

CANAAN — The long-awaited revival of the Housatonic Railroad’s weekend scenic rides to Cornwall Bridge will finally begin Saturday, Railroad Vice President of Operations Peter Lynch announced Tuesday.

Man, 60, dies in single-car crash on Route 272 in Norfolk

Norfolk fire and ambulance crews responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.

NORFOLK — A 60-year-old Oregon man is dead after a single-car crash Friday, Nov. 14, according to Connecticut State Police.

Kevin Scott, of Portland, was driving a Ford Escape southbound on Route 272 (Litchfield Road) when he exited the roadway while negotiating a curve and struck a utility pole. The Ford rolled onto its side and the airbags deployed. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no passengers in the car.

GNH collides with Holy Cross

WINSTED — Holy Cross High School won 36-20 against the Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team Saturday, Nov. 15.

The hard-fought contest was won in the air. Holy Cross QB Brady Lombardo completed 16/31 passes for 309 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.

NEWTOWN — Housatonic Valley Regional High School's girls soccer team's state tournament run concluded in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Morgan High School Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The final four finish was the deepest playoff push for Housatonic since 2014. Lainey Diorio scored both goals and keeper Vi Salazar logged 10 saves in the semifinal game.
