Vet Tech Club’s Claus & Paws helps kitties

WINSTED — Surrounded by wagging tails and Christmas cheer, Northwestern Connecticut Community College’s Veterinary Technicians (Vet Tech) Club held its second annual Claus & Paws event Dec. 8 at the NCCC’s Joyner Learning Center.Featuring holiday decorations, music, coffee and donuts, the event raised $375 for the Last Post animal sanctuary in Falls Village by offering portraits of people and their pets for a fee. Student volunteers coordinated the event and took in donations of cat toys, canned food and towels.A repeat of last year’s successful fundraiser, Claus & Paws gave pet owners an opportunity to support continued improvements at the Last Post, which was nearly destroyed by a fire last year. The sanctuary lost 29 cats in a November 2011 blaze, along with much of its equipment and bedding. The Vet Tech Club organized last year’s fundraiser after hearing about the fire.“Northwestern is well known for its vet tech program, and every year the students look for a charitable organization to support,” said Dr. Susan Engwall, associate professor and advisor to the program. “This year they decided to support the charity again.”The club enlisted professional photographer Kimberly Fazzino of Fazzino Photography in Torrington to take portraits of animal owners and their dogs and cats, offering five-by-seven-inch photos for $10 apiece. All proceeds were given to the Last Post. The Last Post currently houses more than 150 cats and has been in operation since 1982. Many cats are available for adoption and all are kept up to date with vaccinations and medical examinations. Donations of blankets, towels, cat carriers and unexpired cat food for the Last Post are always appreciated. Last Post representatives Sue and Richard Gregan expressed appreciation for the support shown by NCCC community. The Vet Tech Club thanked all students, staff and faculty who supported Claus & Paws.  Pets were given home-made goodies, courtesy of club member Jen Burgie.Vet tech club officers Scarlett Szaley and Danielle DiMauro organized volunteers and purchased decorations, and club member Chris Warner played the part of Santa.Among the student volunteers who helped run the event were Sharon Bunnell, Jen Burgie, Megan Coloske, Nicole Cucchiara, Danielle Guarino, Emily Heyland, Roger Ralph and Scarlett Szaley.
