Webutuck BOE anticipates students’ return, thanks community for its continued support

WEBUTUCK — Keeping up-to-date on the latest news from New York state and the North East (Webutuck) Central School District, the Webutuck Board of Education (BOE) exchanged updates — including a tentative date for students to return to school — during a special BOE meeting on Monday, March 30.

Held at 4 p.m., the meeting was organized via teleconference. As was written in a letter to Webutuck families and posted on the district website at www.webutuckschools.org, Superintendent of Schools Raymond Castellani gave a recap of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that all state schools are closed through Tuesday, April 14, in response to COVID-19. On Monday, April 6, Cuomor announced schools will remain closed until Wednesday, April 29.

In following the student calendar, Castellani said the online learning that the district set up for students during the closure will stop for the spring recess from Monday, April 6, through Monday, April 13, resuming Tuesday, April 14.

However, Castellani did remind the BOE that the closure may be extended till the end of the month, which it was. Therefore, the district will have to continue to recalibrate as it gets updates from the state’s Department of Education.

For the time being, Castellani said the district is continuing to offer learning opportunities to students, adding that he has been following up with Director of Student Services/Curriculum and Instruction Jen Eraca and the school principals on the issue.

“It’s pretty impressive that we haven’t skipped a beat,” Castellani said, noting that other New York school districts have had to take a week off in order to set up learning tools for students to use during the closure.

“We jumped in right away and I believe that we have been ahead of the curve… in delivering some form of instruction,” Castellani continued.

Both the 2020-21 school district budget vote and the election of BOE members have been postponed as a result of the pandemic, as has the deadline for BOE candidates to submit petitions for their election. Though Castellani said the state has been looking at Monday, June 1, as a potential date for the vote and election, this date is subject to change.

Moving forward, Castellani expressed his sincere gratitude to the community for donating an estimated $4,800 to help support the district’s Feed Our Families program. Among those who have donated to the program, Castellani thanked BOE member Richard Keller-Coffey and his wife, Nancy; The Palombo Group; Silo Ridge Field Club LLC; the Webutuck PTA; the Webutuck Administrators’ Association; and Webutuck teacher Karen Thompson and her husband, Karl.

“The community is amazing and our staff is amazing and people are just stepping up,” he said, adding that this amount represented more than three weeks of donations to feed district families.

With the cost of food rising, Business Administrator Robert Farrier said the district has been looking at other vendors in order to provide a broad selection of food to deliver to families.
