The whens and whys of library’s gala party

SHARON — This year, the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Our upcoming fall fundraiser celebrating this milestone will be held at the historic Sharon home Weatherstone. How this came to be is just one of the special stories that happen at the library all the time.

Elaine Bresee is a regular visitor to the library. She says that she’s warmly greeted whenever she walks in, adding that the staff knows her literary tastes and that their recommendations are always spot on. Elaine, in short, loves the place.

On one of her visits, Elaine expressed her appreciation for the library’s staff and services. She said that she’d like to do something to give back to the place that means so much to her. This developed into an offer to host our fall gala, with her daughter, Carolyne Roehm, at Weatherstone.

Weatherstone, for those who may not know, is probably the most historically significant home in Sharon. Completed in 1765, it is where Samuel Webster once taught school, where the first American medical conference was held, and more. And today, reflecting Roehm’s decorative touch, the house and grounds are stunning.

On the occasion of the library’s 125th anniversary, it seems appropriate that we celebrate at Weatherstone, which itself is just over 250 years old. It is even more appropriate that this is due to one of the special relationships built at the library.

The event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music and an auction. Tickets are, fittingly, priced at $125, with Sponsor tickets at $250. We are hoping for a turnout befitting the venue and the occasion.

For details, call 860-364-5041 or go to www.hotchkisslibrary.org.

We like to think that Elaine Bresee’s experience is typical of that of anyone who walks in the door. Those who frequent the Library know that it is. If you’re not a regular visitor, come and find out for yourself.

Tom Trowbridge is the board president of the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon.

When longtime arts administrator Amy Wynn became the first executive director of the American Mural Project (AMP) in 2018, the nonprofit was part visionary art endeavor, part construction site and part experiment in collaboration.

Today, AMP stands as a fully realized arts destination, home to the world’s largest indoor collaborative artwork and a thriving hub for community engagement. Wynn’s departure, marked by her final day Oct. 31, closes a significant chapter in the organization’s evolution. Staff and supporters gathered the afternoon before to celebrate her tenure with stories, laughter and warm tributes.
