Whiting Street gallery showcases broad talent

Just a quick peek into the new gallery in the Blachere building at 210 Holabird Ave. (corner of Holabird and Whiting Street) will tell you that the artists’ community there is flourishing.

Among the several artists now exhibiting in the space is furniture upholsterer and chef extraordinaire Theresa Cannavo, who is running classes on fixing up old furniture, along with textile wizards from the Workhouse Studio, who create hats, scarves, slippers and giant quilts. Some of the latest restorations by A&K Hitchcock Furniture Refinishing are on display, along with paintings by Cheryl Bartley and her husband Russell Dutton Buchner (aka Rusél). Mixed-media artist Barbara Jaroch, painter Gay Schempp, pewtersmith James Gagnon and master carpenter Tony Indio all have works on display. You can also see information on the American Mural Project, which is housed next-door on Whiting Street.

Artists also have their own studios throughout the 210 Holabird Ave. building. For more information, call Cheryl Bartley at 860-806-1931.
