Who is Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., alias Cross?

He’s the shooter who took the lives of three innocent people at the Jewish Community Center and parking lot in Overland Park, Kan., on Sunday, April 13.But his real name is Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., not Glenn Cross. Miller was born in 1941 and is a former U.S. Army Green Beret who has shamed the uniform many of us have worn with pride. Miller was forced to retire from military service because of his subversive activities in the Ku Klux Klan and several white supremacy groups.Glenn Miller became a leader of the pro-Nazi National States Rights Party, and then founded and became the self-styled “Grand Wizard” of the Carolina and Confederate Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), as well as the head of the follow-on White Patriot Party. Miller has been linked with persons engaged in the fatal lynching of several African Americans, hate crimes against Jews, robberies of armored trucks and banks and running an illegal paramilitary organization, but has escaped justice time and again.Miller was involved in several failed plots to assassinate civil rights lawyer Morris Dees as well as a successful fire bombing of Dees’ Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala. The burning was ordered by Miller’s former ally, KKK Grand Dragon Louis Beam Jr. Morris Dees helped the Feds break the financial backs of the KKK and several other hate groups, and Dees still needs security protection at public events. (For the full story, read “A Lawyer’s Journey — The Morris Dees Story,” with Steve Fiffer, published by The American Bar Association, 2001.)A little-known, and sadistic, fact about adherents to Nazi-style white supremacy movements in the U.S. is that they are even more prejudiced against Jews than Blacks, if that is possible. As Glenn Miller summarized the situation: “We are engaged in a holy battle against Jews,” who, he said, are the leading “Communists” running our U.S. government. When questions are put to racists the likes of Glenn Miller, it is clear that none of them know a thing about Judaism, and very few have actually, or knowingly, met a Jew in their entire lives. It’s an exercise in group paranoia, violence and insanity. Finally, in an internal conflict within the fractious KKK and white supremacy movement, and in order to save himself from prosecution, Glenn Miller turned state’s evidence against his former friend, KKK Grand Dragon Louis Beam and others. As a result of this, not only to flee his past, but perhaps also to escape revenge assassination by his former friends and enemies, he fled the state, had his name changed from Miller to Cross, grew a beard, created a different personage, blogged as “Cross,” and as “Miller” laid low — until April 13.So, a remaining question is this: Is Glenn Miller, alias Cross, still engaged in mayhem and organized treason against the United States, or is he just a left-over, deranged lone wolf acting on his own? His trial in June may answer this question. Meanwhile, as a flight risk, he would have to post a $10 million bond to earn the temporary freedom he so clearly doesn’t deserve. Now that his former friends and enemies know his location and alias, Glenn Miller may actually be better off in prison than outside.Sharon resident Anthony Piel is a former director and general legal counsel of the World Health Organization.
