WINSTED — The annual Highland Lake Watershed Association’s (HLWA) boat parade was held on Saturday, July 11.
Residents sailed 20 boats as part of the event, with the boats traveling from Holland Beach to Resha Beach, then throughout the east side of the lake up to the third bay.
Many of the boats were decorated — one as a disco night club, another as a jungle.
“The boat parade is always one of the most fun activities that we hold each year,” HLWA President Sam Sciacca said. “It’s been going on for at least 11 years, perhaps longer. I think it’s a lot of fun, and people like to decorate and participate. It’s very low-key, and even the boats that don’t decorate at all still like to take part in the parade.”
Sciacca said the parade is a good way for HLWA to demonstrate what sailing is all about.
“We don’t get a lot of opportunities to do that in a very public way,” he said, “except for the Laurel Parade, where we have a float and we sponsor a Laurel Queen contestant. I think this is a way for contestants to show their support for HLWA.”
