Another look at Country Gardeners

MILLERTON — A story about Country Gardeners Florist ran on Thursday, Jan. 19. Details about the business, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year, were sketchy — but that hasn’t hurt business, according to owner Joanne Scasso, who said her customers are consistent and loyal.

“Millerton is always good,” Scasso said, adding her customers reach from New York to Connecticut to Massachusetts. “Salisbury, Lakeville, Canaan, Great Barrington — I would say [customers come from] all of our surrounding towns … it all depends on the day."

Here’s an updated version of the earlier story, with all of the proper facts.

Scasso started working in the field while attending Webutuck High School in the late 1970s. Falling in love with the profession, she continued to work in the field through her college career at SUNY Cortland.

Scasso opened her first flower shop in 1986 in Amenia, and then decided to move her business to Millerton in 1987.

“I chose Millerton because it is a diverse and vibrant place,” she said.

Initially, Scasso operated out of rented spaces until she decided to purchase the old railroad building on 5 Railroad Plaza in 1992.

Scasso attributes her success to her determination, the support of fellow merchants and her staff.

“Most of my success is thanks to them,” she said. “Working in this fast-paced industry, I heavily rely on my staff. On any given day we may serve between 20 to 50 customers, if not more.”

Scasso said she does weddings at the Interlaken Inn in Lakeville, Conn. She is not, she stressed, the coordinator at the inn.

Country Gardeners Florist is located at 5 Railroad Plaza in Millerton. For more information, call 518-789-6440 or go to www.countrygardenersflorist.com.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.

As the chilly breeze settles in, Halloween approaches and the community yearns for spooky festivities — HVRHS has answered that calling. An event held annually for the past eight years, the HVRHS haunted house has returned.

The event is organized by the current senior and junior year classes — 2026 and 2027 respectively — and held to raise money that goes toward the junior and senior class’s activities such as senior week, prom, the senior class trip, and more.
