Art in the Loft has local focus

MILLBROOK — The opening of the 21st Annual Art in the Loft art exhibit was held on Saturday, June 1, with a reception and the start of voting for the 2019 Art in the Loft competition.

Ten works of art, in varied mediums such as acrylics, oils, watercolor, encaustic, photography and metallic pigment, will remain on display until the final event in November, and visitors to the winery can peruse the works and vote for their favorites. The winner will have his or her work made into a wine label to be featured on bottles sold at the winery.

Artists in the show are Sean Bowen, E. Crimmins, Carolyn Edlund, Pam Krimsky, Carol Loizides, Holly Pierce, Laura Martine-Blanco, Charlotte Tusch, Karl Schmitz and Ilga Ziemins-Kurens. All the works are for sale and will be available for pickup after the November closing.

An excellent turnout for the Saturday opening was followed by a busy Sunday afternoon, with families, wine tastings and birthday celebrations, including Elizabeth Pope, who turned 21 on Sunday and was joined by Dylan Leary and other friends in her honor.

Room Manager Jake Euell and the rest of the staff kept things moving. The artwork was clearly appreciated and the voting was brisk.

The contest is sponsored by Arts Mid-Hudson, a nonprofit arts service organization that began in 1964 and has since supported artists and art organizations in the region. It offers various venues and events in support of the arts, including festivals, folk art programs, exhibitions and performances. Art in the Loft is a favorite. It also promotes creative opportunities for artists, educators, students and art lovers — bringing together art, culture and the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley region.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
