Arts festival draws big crowds to tiny hamlet of Wassaic

WASSAIC — The Wassaic Project held its ninth annual three-day Summer Festival extravaganza from Friday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 7.

Thousands of visitors gathered at various venues during the course of the weekend to partake in different activities.

Different stages were set up throughout the small hamlet for performing bands and dancers.

Visitors enjoyed a diverse lineup of performers the first two days, as well as a series of short films that screened at the Lantern Inn.

The project’s annual summer art exhibit, “Appetite for Destruction,” was open to the public as well.

While the festivities encouraged a family atmosphere throughout the weekend, Sunday was a special treat for youngsters.

The Art Nest at Maxon Mills was dubbed The Pirate’s Nest for the weekend as youngsters engaged in pirate art and activities.

Little ones had the opportunity to learn some dance moves, which they exhibited while swaying to tunes by Grammy Award-winning children’s musician Dan Zanes of Dan and Friends. His music has been featured on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney and on Nickelodeon’s Noggin.

“We had about 25 people at the dance classes and about 150 people at Dan’s performance,” said Co-Executive Director Eve Biddle. “That is totally the point of today’s programming — family fun.”

Another fun activity for children was provided by Voorhees Bounce House and Events.

“I’ve been participating since the beginning of The Wassaic Project,” said Paul Voorhees, owner of the company. “I love being  a part of their activities because it brings families and community together.”

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
