Bartram leaves Hotchkiss Library

SHARON — The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon announced on Friday, Aug. 28, that Head Librarian Emily Bartram will leave in mid-September to accept a position as archivist and curator of the archives of the Archdiocese of Hartford.

Board President Barclay Collins said, “Since joining the library staff in 2011, Emily has been a major contributor to the success and growth of library services and programs.

“She instituted our Sunday open hours, and has been a leader in fundraising activities, including our very successful book signing event in late July.

“Emily has been very active in our community, serving for many years as a member of the Sharon Fire Department Ambulance Squad. She has also served on the board of the Sharon Historic District Commission, and as a member of the Sharon Town Democratic Committee, and in addition has volunteered her time working in the archives of the Sharon Historical Society.

“We are grateful for her many accomplishments at the Library. Our board and staff, and her many friends in Sharon, wish her well in her new responsibilities for the archdiocese.”

Collins also said by email that, “We will miss her, but this is a terrific opportunity for her.”

Of future leadership for the library, he said, “We have two great new Co-Executive Directors in Lorraine Faison and Robin Yuran, both experienced, professional librarians,  so we are well-covered.”

What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
