Canaan Child Care will build new center

NORTH CANAAN — At what was a good-sized crowd for a town meeting here, a lease of land for the Canaan Child Care Center (CCCC) was approved Jan. 20.

About 40 residents voted unanimously for a 99-year, $1 lease for about an acre of wooded land on Pease Street, across from North Canaan Elementary School.

Under the guidance of center Director Fran Chapell and a volunteer board of directors, the center has worked hard in recent years to achieve a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation. Its staff has or is in the process of earning teaching degrees. Their efforts made grant funding available that helps keep child care affordable for local families.

The only thing standing in the way of an optimum environment for school readiness programs is the building itself, which was originally built as a place for Boy Scouts to meet. It was shared at first, but the need for child care eventually won out over the Scouts’ use.

CCCC recently raised $10,000 toward a matching grant through the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. A state grant application is in, as part of its plan to finance the project.

Resident State Trooper Jason St. John previously told The Lakeville Journal, in regard to new traffic and parking procedures at the school, that he has some concerns about added traffic, but that there are safety advantages to having the child care center so close to the school.

The new child care center plan has yet to be reviewed by local planning agencies. The process will likely involve at least one public hearing.
