At Cannonball Run, 31 Falls Village runners

FALLS VILLAGE — Eamon Dempsey of Delmar, N.Y., won the Ed McGuire Memorial Culligan Cannonball Run Saturday, Nov. 6, with a time of 16 minutes 22 seconds over the 5 kilometer course.

Jeff Niedeck of North Canaan was right behind him at 16:43, and Marge DeMarrais of Sharon led the women at 19:30.

There were 31 Falls Villagers in the race, and 80 total. A group of locals led by high school student Jacob Horowitz (23:10) and including Dominic Sanchez (23:19) and Ben Wilson (23:29) finished in places 19-21, respectively.

Just a few seconds later a second batch of Falls Village runners — Darius Sanchez (23:58), Elissa Brown (24:01) and Ayelet Singer (24:05) passed the finish line to lock up the places from 23 to 25.

And a third group — Jillian Cannon (26:27), Ariel Kohane (26:52), Heather Mechare (26:57) and Ana Horowitz (26:58) locked up places 38 through 41.

Bill Beebe acquitted himself well in the race, coming in 14th at  21:36.

For reference, Dempsey’s winning time of 16:22 translates to a pace of 1 mile in five minutes 16 seconds. Brown’s 24:01 is a pace of 7:44, and Emily DeMazza’s 55th place time of 32:10 is a pace of 10:22.

A good crowd turned out on the crisp, sunny late autumn day, with the Volunteer Fire Department providing hot dogs and hot drinks and the odd pack of touring bicyclists coming upon the scene with good-natured surprise.

The fire department had watchers around the course, who kept in touch by radio, and Greystone Racing handled the official timing.

It was the 10th year of the annual event, sponsored by Culligan Water Conditioning and the Falls Village Volunteer Fire Department.

The artist called ransome

‘Migration Collage' by ransome

Alexander Wilburn

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.
