Children Celebrate 'Year of the Boar'

LAKEVILLE — Students at the Indian Mountain School celebrated the beginning of the Chinese New Year on Tuesday morning, Feb. 20 (the new year actually began on Sunday, Feb. 18, but schools were closed).

This is the Year of the Boar (some call it the Year of the Pig), according to the Chinese calendar. Pre-kindergarten teacher Kathy Pressman explained to students and parents gathered together for the celebration that this is the Golden Year of the Boar, which is particularly auspicious.

The Chinese zodiac moves in a 12-year cycle, and the Year of the Boar is the last in the current cycle. The Year of the Golden Boar occurs only once every 60 years (five sets of the 12-year cycle).

(And as if that weren’t significant enough, the new year also nearly coincides with a lunar eclipse on March 3.)

The students got the Golden Year off to a lively start with a parade of two dragons (actually, students from the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs) at 8 a.m. Tuesday. They then gathered together in a half circle with older students from the school.

Pressman gave a presentation on all the different animals assigned to the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle.

And then the children shared holiday presents, including Chinese fortune cookies.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.
