Cologne Cathedral sends student to state Geo Bee

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Central School Geography Bee champion is eighth-grader Jonathan Miller. He was engaged in an exciting championship round with another eighth-grader, Stephen Moon. The title was decided on the Bee’s equivalent of sudden death overtime. The final question was “Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic Church in northern Europe, is located in the Rhineland region of what country?” Jonathan correctly answered, “Germany.” He will take a written test in early January to qualify for a place among up to 100 school champions in the Connecticut state bee on March 30 at Central Connecticut State University. The results of the test won’t be known until sometime in February. The state champion then goes to the national finals at the headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C., between May 22 and 24, 2012.The first place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Nonnewaug High School’s girls varsity team beat Housatonic 52-42 in the first game of the regular season.

Moving company eyes Cornwall location

CORNWALL — At the Dec. 9 meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission, the commission had a pre-application discussion with Karl Saliter, owner of Karl on Wheels, who plans to operate his moving business at 26 Kent Road South, which is an existing retail space.

Saliter said he will use the existing retail section of the building as a mixed retail space and office, and the rear of the building for temporary storage during moving operations.

Falls Village selectmen discuss Sand Road

FALLS VILLAGE — The Board of Selectmen at its Dec. 17 meeting heard concerns about the condition of Sand Road.

First Selectman David Barger reported a resident came before the board to talk about the road that is often used as feeder between Salisbury and Canaan.
