Concentrated commerce in Mabbettsville

Mabbettsville — Now open just outside Millbrook village is Shops at Mabbettsville, a cooperative store located at Arrowsmith Forge in the hamlet. The collaboration involves Debra Coddington, co-owner of Arrowsmith, proving the space for shopkeeper Sharyn Faranda, vintage retailer Tara Wing and several other local artisans.According to Coddington, the project came about as a means of scaling down exclusively Arrowsmith operations. Previously, the business ran its own showroom.“It’s a cooperative kind of venture,” she said, “instead of me doing it myself.”Forged steel products by Arrowsmith like chandeliers and beds are still for sale in this new iteration of the space. As for Faranda, besides running the show, her own yarn and hand-knitted items — including baby clothes, accessories and women’s sweaters — are merchandised as well.Wing, original owner of the former Pumpkin House, is contributing vintage goods to the operation.“This isn’t Pumpkin House, but it’s another brainstorm that I’ve got my hand into,” she said.Other goods are wood carved whales and sculptures from Jeff Raymond (“The Whale Guy”), beaded jewelry from Kris Anderson and organic products from Hudson Valley Skin Care. The shops opened in time for the holidays on Nov. 29 and are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week through the holidays. After New Year’s Eve, hours are subject to change for regular business, and according to Faranda, expansion is on the horizon. For more information, go to the public Facebook page at www.facebook.com/shopsat.mabbettsville.
