North East — According to town Supervisor John Merwin, local residents have raised multiple concerns regarding the intersection of County Route 5, Charlie Hill Road and Perotti Road.
County Route 5 is accessed on the west side of Route 22 near The Round Tuit restaurant.
Less than three miles west, the route crosses with Charlie Hill Road to the north and Perotti Road to the south.
Heading west, a yellow and black intersection cross sign appears on County Route 5 before the intersection. The speed limit is 45 miles per hour.
However, concerns raised suggest the sign is not clear enough and that drivers are unaware of the intersecting roads.
“There’ve been some close calls,” Merwin said. “Some residents asked us to look into it.”
As a result, North East Highway Superintendent Robert Stevens arranged to meet with Dutchess County Department of Public Works (DPW) Highway Division Director of Construction and Maintenance Gary Cooper for an on-site inspection.
Cooper said the Highway Division has referred the situation to DPW’s Engineering Division to consider potential measures for enhancing signage and awareness of the intersection.
Possible ways to enhance signage include adding a yellow strip on the post, a speed panel with a “suggested speed,” street name signs and/or moving the sign altogether, Cooper said.
The director of construction and maintenance clarified that street name signs already exist at the intersection itself, but that additional street name signs before the intersection might raise a driver’s attention sooner.
Cooper said the Engineering Division plans to visit the site this weekend.
