Different cultures celebrated at annual supper

Webutuck — The North East (Webutuck) Central School District held its annual International Potluck Supper at Webutuck Elementary School, Thursday, March 27.For more than 10 years, members in the district have gathered for this event for the chance to celebrate and learn about the many cultures in the community. According to co-organizer Monica Baker, an English as a second language teacher at the elementary school, Thursday’s was one of the best potlucks yet, with an estimated attendance of 150 to 200 people. The event has grown over the years, and now features live music from Neuva Imagine, a local band with several Webutuck alumni. With free admission, families are encouraged to bring a dish representative of their ethnic background. District parent Tereza Joya brought rice, beans and farofa — a topping added to black beans made with eggs, bacon and yucca flour. Tereza’a family, including three children, has Brazilian and Ecuadorian ties. The supper was accompanied by a craft station run by district speech therapists Karen Thomson and Rebecca Garrard. Students constructed paper speech bubbles that read the word “hello” in various languages.“I think it’s a great night because it brings people together,” Baker said. “It’s a free night of fun!”Webutuck elementary student Sophia Marcus confirmed the night’s purpose.“I like foods from different countries,” she said.
