English Language scores up in Salisbury

SALISBURY — Salisbury Central School Principal Stephanie Magyar reported to the Board of Education on Monday, Sept. 23, that the final hire for the new school year is Crystal Ohmen as cafeteria cashier and office clerk.

Ohmen, of Lakeville, attended Salisbury Central and Housatonic Valley Regional High School,  and is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a B.S. in horticulture.

Magyar reported on the 2018-19 Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test results. She said 99.4% of Salisbury Central students participated in the SBAC testing last spring.

The school’s English Language Arts (ELA) scores increased, with 79.4% of students meeting or exceeding the benchmark, which puts Salisbury in the top 12% in the state.

In 2017-18 testing, 76.9% of SCS students met or exceeded the ELA benchmark. The state average for meeting or exceeding the ELA benchmark in 2018-19 was 55.7%.

Math scores were down from 67.6%  to 61.7% meeting or exceeding the benchmark, but are still well above the state average of 41.8%.
