The Millerton News has begun a multipart exploration of what it’s like to explore the landscape on a motorized two-wheel vehicle, such as a moped, motorbike or scooter.
Technically, mopeds are vehicles with 49cc motors and achievable speeds of 20-30 mph. As motor size and achievable speed increase, state regulations (which are different in every state) classify the vehicle as a motorcycle or scooter. But for this series, written and illustrated by Sharon, Conn., artist and writer Carl Chaiet, we’ll use the word moped most of the time.
Accoutrements
No moped worth its salt would be seen without accoutrements. The choices are limitless so rather than list them all I will offer a limited version in a Chinese menu format.

The seat
The duration of your ride will dictate the padding. The longer the ride, the more padding is required. As most mopeds are made in countries where the average citizen is the size of a short skinny freshman cross-country runner, they are made for that runner. Five-hour rides sneak up very quickly and you remember the last hour for far longer than the first four.
Purloining a Vespa seat if you didn’t buy a Vespa is an option, as there are not many after-market seats available. However with a little time, some plywood and foam rubber and a staple gun you can make a wonderful alternative. Tempur-pedic would be the best material; just ask somebody who owns one.
Back support
If you bought the lighted luggage carrier, it probably came complete with back support. If you opted for the milk crate, a bungeed pillow will suffice.
