Amenia market moves inside for the winter

AMENIA — There’s good news for fans of farm-fresh foods: the Amenia Farmers Market will be open all winter.

During the summer, the market was held in the parking lot of Town Hall (the former Amenia Elementary School on Route 22).

Now that it’s too cold for vendors to sit outside all day, market organizers Rudy Eschbach and Sophie Meili have moved the market inside Town Hall. In addition to changing its location, they’ve also changed the hours: The market is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting Nov. 6.

Seven to 10 vendors are expected to have booths at the new Town Hall, selling meats (lamb, beef and pork), baked goods, produce (vegetables, fruits, herbs and grain) and nonedibles such as soaps, scarecrows and other artisanal items.

All of the products come from the Tri-state region and many are organic.

“The vendors said they were very happy with the Farmers Market, and just about all of them wanted to continue through the winter,†Eschbach said.

“We were grateful the town let us set up right in the new Town Hall. This will help us retain our customer base, which has  been supporting us through the summer months.â€

The market will have expanded hours during the holidays. From the last two weeks of November up until Christmas, area artisans can join the regular vendors in selling their wares. The only stipulation will be that they use local and native natural materials. In May, the market will move back outside and return to the old schedule (Friday, 2 to 6 p.m.).

“It has exceeded our expectations from a financial standpoint and in terms of the number of vendors,†Eschbach said of the market. “We started with four vendors and grew from there. I think that, because of the market, people have stopped in Amenia who normally might not have. It works both for the vendors and for the town and we’re highly encouraged. We’re really happy with it.â€

SHARON — A well-attended public hearing convened by the Board of Finance on Friday, April 26, heard residents’ comments on the 2024-25 budgets proposed by the Board of Education and the Board of Selectmen. Barbara Prindle served as moderator for the hearing.

Following the public hearing, the finance board met to discuss the questions raised by residents and voted unanimously that the budgets would proceed on to town vote at the annual Town Meeting scheduled for Friday, May 10, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Vega earned the top rank with a GPA of 4.420, just ahead of Saccardi’s GPA of 4.412.

SALISBURY — The test run of a boat launch monitoring program at the East Twin marina, designed to keep invasive hydrilla from spreading, went off without a hitch on Sunday, April 21, according to Twin Lakes Association (TLA) officials.

The day-long soft launch coincided with a sanctioned bass fishing derby at East Twin, allowing a trio of state-trained monitors, all TLA board members, to have conversations with fishermen about invasive hydrilla’s presence in the lake, offer tips on preventing its spread, and visually inspect boats and trailers as they entered and exited the marina.
