From family events to computer repair, a handy local business

MILLERTON — If you don’t know Troy Ramcharran by name, you probably know his work. Ramcharran’s company, Handy Boys Enterprise, is responsible for a variety of free family events held for the past two summers at Eddie Collins Field in Millerton.

Handy Boys, which has been based out of Lakeville for the past few years, is refocusing its central operating hub in Ramcharran’s home on South Elm Street in Millerton. The move comes after the welcoming reception he’s received from Millerton.

The business is based around his computer repair services, but Handy Boys is definitely an umbrella name for Ramcharran, who also offers computer networking, security camera installations, sound equipment rentals and deejaying services. The business already has a long list of clients in the area, from Mizza’s Pizza in Lakeville to Lime Rock Garage and The Maplebrook School and Sears in Amenia.

Handy Boys, which is owned by Ramcharran and his wife, Toni, is putting customer service first and foremost, with unique angles like 24/7 support calls and services for emergency computer problems. He is a certified Microsoft technician but works in both PC and Mac platforms. Pick up and delivery or dropoff services are all available. The business is also offering free repairs to churches and not-for-profit groups in the Tri-state area, as a show of support to the community.

Ramcharran would also like to start a computer recycling program, where undesired but still working equipment could be fixed up and donated to local community groups.

“There would obviously be a paper trail and all that, so that people would be able to see where their computers are going and who they are helping, Ramcharran said. “I don’t feel there’s always enough here for the local kids, and I’d love to help, even if it was just by giving one kid the opportunity to explore his or her talents.

Events Under the Stars, a blanket term for all of the free family events organized by Handy Boys at Eddie Collins Field, is about “giving kids a place they can go and have fun, Ramcharran said. “I like to try to help out the neighborhood as much as possible.

Handy Boys Enterprise is located at 5877 South Elm St., just south of the village center; the Ramcharrans can be reached by phone at 860-318-5557.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
