MILLERTON— The acrid smell of smoke could be detected along Simmons Street on Friday, April 12, after a fire alarm alerted Millerton’s volunteer rescue squad that something was amiss.
The fire alarm went off shortly before 12:30 p.m., and brought four firetrucks from the North East Fire District, its rescue squad vehicle, an ambulance and a firetruck from Sharon, Conn., to the scene at 20 Simmons Street.
A few people were gathered across the street from the peach colored two story home, as were firefighters on the front lawn. As the hoses pumped water, a ladder was brought to the rear of the house.
According to Fire Chief Jason Watson, the smoke was the result of a furnace malfunctioning.
“We’re trying to vent it now,” he said of the basement equipment.
When asked how many incidents like these occur, Watson said “it’s hard to tell.”
One thing he could share, though, was that property owners should change the batteries in their carbon monoxide and smoke detectors annually.
