Fire destroys Sharon house Tuesday

SHARON — An early morning fire on Tuesday, Feb. 10, totally destroyed a three-story house and garage at 423 Route 4.

The fire started in the garage connected to the house, according to Sharon Volunteer Fire Department member Todd Anderson.

The road, which leads from Sharon to Cornwall, was closed to traffic as fire engines from Sharon, Lakeville, Cornwall, Warren, Goshen, Amenia and Wassaic responded to the four-alarm blaze. A crime investigation truck from the Connecticut state police was also at the scene. School buses were allowed to pass even though the road was closed to regular vehicles, firefighters said.

By 11 a.m., smoke was still billowing from the ruins of the residence. The smell of charred wood was in the air as far away as a half mile from the site. Firefighters were climbing through the remaining pieces of the house, trying to put out the remaining embers.

No one was in the house or garage at the time of the fire. However, two firefighters were injured when they slipped on ice as they fought the blaze. They were both taken to Sharon Hospital for observation.

The names of the owner of the building and the house’s residents have not been released.
