Friends of Main Street To Host Grand Opening Celebration

WINSTED — Friends of Main Street moved into its new office — on Main Street, of all places — last month, and plans a grand opening celebration in conjunction with several of its new neighbors Friday, March 23, starting at 7:30 p.m.

There will be special events at local businesses as well as a mixer and open house at the Friends office. Kathy’s Cupboard and the Dusty Rose gift shop, which both recently moved into the spaces directly adjacent to the new Friends of Main Street office, will offer 20 percent off merchandise for the event. In addition, Health Food Corner, the shop across Elm Street from the Dusty Rose, is set to offer free blood pressure screenings.

"It’s both to celebrate the opening of the stores, but also to celebrate our opening," Friends of Main Street President Barb DeBellis said Monday. "It’ll be kind of like a mini-block party."

Friends of Main Street was able to facilitate the move thanks, in large part, to an action grant from Alcoa Howmet.

"They usually do one with us each year," DeBellis said of the action grant, which differs from a typical grant in that the company offers its employees’ labor in addition to financial aid. DeBellis said Howmet bestowed a $3,000 check on Friends of Main Street, and also provided 40 hours of labor to assist with the actual move.

"The check will go towards rent," DeBellis said.

Other businesses getting in on the action March 23 include the Winsted Pawn Shop, which is also offering a 20 percent discount; Home Again, where shoppers will be treated to 10 to 50 percent off selected items; and Kelly’s Kitchen, which is offering a complimentary specialty coffee drink or homemade cookie with purchase of any dinner entrée. The 20 percent discount at Kathy’s Cupboard is good for one item per customer, and the shop will also be giving out door prizes. At the Dusty Rose, all merchandise will be 20 percent off.

Friends of Main Street itself will be playing host to a business mixer.

"We just open the doors and people come in. It kind of takes care of itself," DeBellis said, explaining that one purpose of the event is to encourage business networking. "We want to provide a forum for people to get to know each other in a noncompetitive setting."

DeBellis said the new quarters, the third office in Friends of Main Street’s history but the first actually on Main Street itself, are working out well.

"We’re finally here and it’s great. We have a great space," she said, adding that the move, which began on Valentine’s Day, is almost complete. "We still have some awards to hang."

DeBellis is Friends of Main Street’s only paid employee; in addition, the group has several volunteer office staff manning the new quarters.

Aside from the celebration at the end of this month, Friends of Main Street has several other activities planned. Upcoming events include a sign workshop scheduled for the end of April, where business owners can get ideas and tips on how to improve signage to attract customers; a garden and median preparation workshop April 28 and one on the proper use of mulch May 12; on May 19 the group will be working on beautifying Prospect Street Trail; June 11 is the Connecticut Main Street Network’s annual meeting; and the Winsted Friends of Main Street annual meeting is scheduled for June 25.

Information on these events will appear on these pages as they approach, or interested parties can stop by the new office for schedules and itineraries.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

Student initiatives shake up Homecoming
The poster promoting the Homecoming dance boasted the event would feature dancing, games and a bonfire. Reactions to the planned move outside were mixed, with some students excited about the changes and others expressing a desire for tradition.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
