Harry Lawrence Colley II

WEST CORNWALL  — Harry Lawrence Colley II, 68, of Smith Place, died at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, Conn., on June 14, 2017, from the complications of a long bout of vascular diseases and cancer. 

Harry was born on Sept. 19, 1948, in Danbury, Conn., the son of the late Emma (Gallagher) and Harry L. Colley, a family with deep roots in Redding, Conn. 

He graduated from Joel Barlow High School, the American University of Puerto Rico and Charter Oak College. He worked as a university teacher in Puerto Rico and, here in the Northwest Corner, founded and headed Cloverdale, Inc., a distributor of a group of environmentally sound cleaning products.

Besides waiting on tables and working as a bartender and entertainer to put himself through college, Harry was for many years active in the theatrical life of the Northwest Corner, being an active member of the Oblong Valley Players, Tri-Arts Theater, Sharon Stage, Clockwork Repertory Theater, Greenwoods Theater and other groups. 

As avocation, he was an active kayaker until stopped by illness.

Harry is survived by Barbara Farnsworth, his life partner of 39 years; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Joan Colley, of Goshen; his nephews, Brent and Jamesen Colley; his niece, Megan Colley; and Barbara’s sons Andrew and Alexander Farnsworth, as well as many friends.

Burial will be at the North Cornwall Cemetery on Rattlesnake Road at the family’s convenience. 

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. 

The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of the arrangements.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.

As the chilly breeze settles in, Halloween approaches and the community yearns for spooky festivities — HVRHS has answered that calling. An event held annually for the past eight years, the HVRHS haunted house has returned.

The event is organized by the current senior and junior year classes — 2026 and 2027 respectively — and held to raise money that goes toward the junior and senior class’s activities such as senior week, prom, the senior class trip, and more.
