Highlanders Extend Streak


The Northwestern boys baseball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth and then hung on to defeat Terryville, 9-8, Monday, April 23, at Northwestern.

Dan Bittel had the big hit in the rally when he doubled in three runs in the sixth inning, while Shea Roberson contributed three hits. Adam Bittle had three hits that included two doubles and an RBI, while Chris Davidson drove in three runs.

With the win, the first-place Highlanders improved to 8-0 in the Berkshire league.


Highlander Golfers

Defeat Granby, 167-193


The Northwestern golf team defeated Granby Tuesday, April 24, at Greenwoods Country Club in Winsted.

Mike Kelley took medalist honors with a round of 39. Other scores for the Highlanders included Adam Devins, 45; Isaiah Baril-Dore, 43; and Vincent Gangi, 40.

With the victory, the Highlanders improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Berkshire League.


Highlanders Beat

Housatonic, 113-37


The Northwestern boys track and field team defeated Housatonic Tuesday, April 24, at Northwestern.

Ethan Toczko had an outstanding day for the Highlanders as he picked up victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter sprints. Other winners for Northwestern included Renrick Pesce in the 110-meter hurdles; Andrew Fitzgerald in the 300-meter hurdles, Jesse Pantuosco in the 800-meter run; Matt Janco in the 1,600-meter run; and Mike Woods in the 3,200-meter run.

In the field events, Josh Seibold also notched three wins as he captured the javelin, discus and hammer throw, while Pesce captured the long jump and Sam Read won the pole vault.

With the win, the Highlanders improved to 6-0 in the Berkshire League.


Northwestern

And Housatonic Tie


The Northwestern girls track and field team came away with a tie, 75-75, Tuesday, April 24, at Northwestern.

Picking up wins in the track events were Michele Levesque in the 100- and 200-meter sprints; Val Tassinari in the 100-meter hurdles; and Megan Lefever in the 800-meter run.

In the field events, Adrian was outstanding for the Lady Highlanders as she captured the shot put, javelin and hammer throw, while Meridel Frederickson won the pole vault.

With the tie, the Highlanders record stood at 2-3-1 in the Berkshire League.


Highlanders Defeat

Lewis Mills, 4-1


The Northwestern boys tennis team defeated Lewis Mills Tuesday, April 24, at the Pinewoods Racquet club.

Conor Deasy and Pat Ryan were victorious in singles for Northwestern, while both doubles teams, Matt Boisvert/Sean Cammilleri and Jed Kravitz/Dan Lippincott, were victorious.

With the win, the Highlanders improved to 6-1 in the Berkshire League.


Terryville Defeats

Northwestern, 2-1


Ashley Hogan threw a no-hitter to lead Terryville past the Northwestern girls softball team Monday, April 23, in Terryville.

Lauryn Alibozck pitched a fine game for Northwestern, giving up just six hits while going the distance. The loss dropped the Lady Highlanders to 3-4 in the Berkshire League.


Highlanders Drop

Yellowjackets, 4-1


The Northwestern boys tennis team swept all three singles matches against Gilbert Monday, April 23, at Gilbert.

Rob Pombar, Conor Deasy and Pat Ryan were all victorious in their matches, while the doubles team of Matt Boisvert and Sean Cammileri won a doubles match for the Highlanders.


Highlanders Sweep

Gilbert, 5-0


The Northwestern girls tennis team was swept by their cross-town rivals from Gilbert Monday, April 23, at the Pinewoods Racquet Club in Torrington.

Kelsey Lamoureaux, Amanda Warchoi and Jamie Charest all won their singles matches for the Lady Highlanders. In the doubles matches, the teams of Robin Szypulski and Kara Noe, and Maggi Muirhead and Natia Janashia were victorious for Northwestern.

With the victory, the Lady Highlanders improved to 5-3 in the Berkshire League.

Harding launches 2026 campaign

NEW MILFORD — State Sen. and Minority Leader Stephen Harding announced Jan. 20 the launch of his re-election campaign for the state’s 30th Senate District.

Harding was first elected to the State Senate in November 2022. He previously served in the House beginning in 2015. He is an attorney from New Milford.

Telecom Reg’s Best Kept On the Books

When Connecticut land-use commissions update their regulations, it seems like a no-brainer to jettison old telecommunications regulations adopted decades ago during a short-lived period when municipalities had authority to regulate second generation (2G) transmissions prior to the Connecticut Siting Council (CSC) being ordered by a state court in 2000 to regulate all cell tower infrastructure as “functionally equivalent” services.

It is far better to update those regs instead, especially for macro-towers given new technologies like small cells. Even though only ‘advisory’ to the CSC, the preferences of towns by law must be taken into consideration in CSC decision making. Detailed telecom regs – not just a general wish list -- are evidence that a town has put considerable thought into where they prefer such infrastructure be sited without prohibiting service that many – though not all – citizens want and that first responders rely on for public safety.
