Housatonic students strike for the planet

FALLS VILLAGE  — Several dozen Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS)students staged a walkout on Friday, Sept. 27, to protest inaction in the face of climate change.

Carrying homemade signs with slogans like “No Planet B” and “Science Not Silence,” the students assembled on the grassy oval in front of the school.

The protest came at the end of a week of worldwide demonstrations. On Sept. 20, the first day of protests around the world, an estimated 4 million people participated.

Students cited 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg as an inspiration.

Elias Abbott, 16, said that he was protesting because, “I care about the planet and my future.”

Students agreed that while they are hopeful that the global demonstrations will spur meaningful change, they are not optimistic.

Physical education teacher Lindsley Colligan urged lawmakers to “stop denying” the existence of climate change.

“You can’t breathe money,  eat money  or plant money,’’ she said.

Ruslan Pierce, 15, talked about the importance of spreading awareness. Pierce stressed the need to “inform the community” of the issue before that issue can be confronted.

“This is a crucial time” to address climate change before it is irreversible, said Keaton Terrall, 15.

Terrall was impressed by the turnout, which he said was “more than he had expected.”
