Janet R. (McGhee) Hall

LAGRANGE, N.Y. — Janet R. (McGhee) Hall, 77, passed away Dec. 4, 2008, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, with her loving family by her side, after a courageous five-year battle with lung cancer.          

On Sept. 3, 1955, at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Pine Plains, she married William J. Hall Jr. He survives her at home.                             

She was born on April 2, 1931, in the town of NorthEast, the daughter of the late Collins and Mildred (Wirehouse) McGhee Sr.

Mrs. Hall was a registered nurse. She worked for Northern Dutchess, Vassar Brother’s and St. Francis hospitals.

She graduated in 1950 from Pine Plains High School and she was an alumna of Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1953.  

She was an active member of the LaGrange Fire Co. # 3 Women’s Auxiliary, past president and member of LaGrange Health Committee and very active member in LaGrange community.

During her battle with cancer she found great comfort attending support groups at the Dyson Center of Vassar Hospital.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lisa Miller and her husband, John, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Carrie Canelli and her husband, Ernie, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; a son, Brian, and his wife, Lynn Hall, of Canajoharie, N.Y.; a sister, Betty  Belliveau,  and her husband, Richard, of Stanfordville, N.Y.; five grandsons, Dustin, Brandon, Thomas, Christopher and Dylan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Collins McGhee Jr.

 A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Dec. 9 from St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church in Copake Falls, the Rev. Joseph Falletta officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Dyson Center for Cancer, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

With the recent death of George Phillips at 100, locals are remembering the Edgewood Restaurant, the Amenia supper club he and his wife, Anne Phillips, owned and operated together for more than two decades.

At the Edgewood, there were Delmonico steaks George carved in the basement, lobster tails from an infrared cooker, local trout from the stream outside the door, and a folded paper cup of butter, with heaping bowls of family-style potatoes and vegetables, plus a shot glass of crème de menthe to calm the stomach when the modest check arrived after dessert.

Falls Village exhibit honors life and work of Priscilla Belcher

Hunt Library in Falls Village will present a commemorative show of paintings and etchings by the late Priscilla Belcher of Falls Village.

Priscilla Belcher, a Canaan resident who was known for her community involvement and willingness to speak out, will be featured in a posthumous exhibition at the ArtWall at the Hunt Library from April 25 through May 15.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 25. The show will commemorate her life and work and will include watercolors and etchings. Belcher died in November 2025 at the age of 95.
